Family Garden - Anne Brennan

Growing up in Bowie, MD we had a big garden in the back corner. Mom planted rows of vegetables and assigned each one of us a row that we had to care for, keep weeded and watered, and harvest when the crops were ready. In this way, she taught us her love for gardening, and we had a sense of accomplishment bringing the food from garden to table. Mom canned many things, so we always had summer fruits and vegetables to eat in the winter time. She also grew roses, tulips, daffodils and lilies, and many other types of flowers. A favorite plant was one she called "Bleeding Hearts" that yielded heart-shaped flowers with a little drop at the end that was supposed to resemble a drop of blood. She also grew many fruit trees, including apple, pear, peaches and cherries, and she also had trellises where she grew Concord grapes. Later, at our house in Gaithersburg, she planted blueberry bushes and used the berries to make her famous Blueberry Teacake and Blueberry Sauce for ice cream.
